"These training courses are crucial in safeguarding the health and safety of individuals handling asbestos, ensuring that all work is conducted with the highest standards of care."

Mr Armell Thomas, Chief Environmental Health Officer, explained: “Asbestos, once a popular material for its fire-resistant and strengthening qualities, was commonly used in building construction until the 1970s. However, research linked exposure to airborne asbestos fibers with significant health risks, including lung cancer. In response, efforts were initiated to remove asbestos from existing buildings and eliminate it from construction materials, prioritizing public health and safety.
“Given the specialized nature and potential hazards of asbestos abatement, the Health Department strictly enforces safety and health regulations. A permit system is in place to ensure all asbestos abatement activities are conducted under rigorous safety standards, protecting both workers and the wider community.”
